Not ready to let go

Last month our veterinary specialist said those 6 words we prayed we'd never hear. "We've done all we can do". Tears fell like rain as we realized Socks is going to die.

But we're not ready to let go, we don't want to say goodbye. We'd pay any price and go to any lengths to make him okay. Nonetheless, it was time to stop the chemotherapy and rely on medications that might help slow the cancer down. Sock's regular vet even removed some large masses just to make him more comfortable. And, during the surgery they removed a small area that was very red and ready to ulcerate (is the the correct term?) and possibly cause an infection that might take him even sooner. So we're ever so greatful for the regular vet. She bought us a little more time.

Still... you should see my baby. He'd eat 24 hours a day if we'd let him, and he plays with toys like a puppy. This dog is sick? Sometimes I forget, just for a minute, how sick he really is. Then reality catches up with me, and I cry again. Here is a picture of Socks with a monkey his grandpa got him at a garage sale. This picture makes me smile...

It's the time of year when people are making lists and thinking about what they want for Christmas. All I want is a miracle. Do dogs get remission? I'd trade everything under the tree for a chance to make Socks okay.

But I guess I can find a little comfort in the knowledge that we've seen to it that he has had a happy life. He's been loved, that's for sure. And he's been babied, and protected, and even a little spoiled... okay, a lot spoiled. No regets... no looking back and thinking we could have done more.

Still....... we're just not ready to let go.
